Texas company plans world’s largest energy-storage system

Xtreme Power is aiming for the world’s largest ­energy-storage system to be fully operational at a Texas wind farm in the second half of 2012, chief ­executive ­Carlos Coe tells Recharge.

The $44m dry-cell battery ­system will be capable of storing 36MW of power from Duke ­Energy’s 153MW Notrees wind farm in west Texas.

It will discharge energy onto the grid whenever demand for electricity is highest, not just when turbines are operating.

Duke is matching a $22m US Department of ­Energy (DOE) grant to cover the cost.

“This is the first large energy-storage and power-management system built in the mainland US,” Coe says. “It will take intermittent wind and turn it into firm, dispatchable power.”
