Statoil zeroes in on Scotland and Maine for Hywind 2 test sites

Norway's Statoil has shortlisted Scotland and the US state of Maine as favoured locations to establish two pilot projects for its Hywind 2 floating wind turbine concept, the company tells Recharge.

Statoil has ruled out Norway as a possible location. "We still don't see enough political support in Norway for offshore wind, although hopefully we will find Norwegian suppliers for the park," says Trine Ingebjørg Ulla, Statoil's head of offshore wind.

Ulla says the 15MW Hywind 2 sites, each with three to five turbines, are likely to be sited some 20km offshore. "We believe these parks can be built for as little as one third of the capital cost of the original 2.3MW demonstration project."
