The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Italian energy giant Eni have opened the Eni-MIT Solar Frontiers Centre (SFRC) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with the aim of researching advanced solar technologies.

The centre grew out of an alliance forged between the two in February 2008.

Over the first two years, it has been the site of technological breakthroughs, including:

- Fabrication of the first ultra-flexible solar cell

- Development of solar cells that mimic the photosynthetic process

- Construction of a prototype for a new type of solar thermal plant using parabolic mirrors for concentrating solar power

“This centre has the potential to fundamentally transform how the world produces and uses energy,” says MIT president Susan Hockfield.
