Sixfold increase in global wind capacity forecast in next 11 years

Global wind power capacity is likely to increase sixfold over the next 11 years and reach 974-gigawatts (GW) by 2020, enough to cover 8% of global power demand, Danish consultancy BTM predicts in a new report.

By 2030, the total global installed capacity could reach 2,483GW and cover 17% of global electricity consumption, according to a business as usual scenario developed by BTM.

A high case projection says global installed capacity would reach 1,023GW by 2020 and could reach 2,934GW by 2030, equivalent to 20.1% of the global need for electricity.

The business as usual scenario is based on the assumption that political priority given to combating climate change is continued and strengthened after a new climate-deal is signed, with emission trading schemes established in all major markets.
