Turbine-makers harness new workhorses

With the EU looking to offshore wind to supply as much as 17% of electricity demand by 2030, turbine-makers have sharpened their focus on ‘reliability and maintainability’ in their latest models.

According to a new study by Spain’s Emerging Energy Research, 80% of electricity generated by offshore wind is foreseen as flowing from Europe by 2020, with the UK and Germany together making up half of the next decade’s installed capacity worldwide.

To hit the European Wind Energy Association’s (EWEA) target of 40 gigawatts (GW) of installed offshore wind capacity by 2020 — and, indeed, to stand any chance of coming close to its aim of generating 150GW by 2030 — a Log in to read complete article.
