TSOs plan Norway-Germany link to shift renewable power

The link is foreseen as an export route for wind and solar power to Norway and hydropower the other way

Plans for a 1.4GW subsea power link between Norway and Germany have advanced after a project deal was signed by transmission system operators (TSOs) Statnett and TenneT, and German bank KfW Ipex.

Expected to cost €1.5-€2bn ($1.96-$2.6bn), the high-voltage direct current interconnector – which is using the working name of GerNor – would run for 500-600km between two as-yet-unspecified connection points.

The offshore line is foreseen as an export route for wind and solar power from Germany to Norway, with the latter sending its surplus hydropower into Europe during low-production times in Germany.

A final investment decision on the project will be taken next year, with commissioning of the line envisaged as early as 2018.
