Japan's exports to China dropped 15% in November compared to last year

A Mitsubishi investment in global wind leader Vestas is being seen by many as a good deal for the Danish firm – but the view from China is not nearly so positive.

Vestas announced in August that it was in talks with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) regarding a "strategic co-operation". It is thought that the Japanese group could take a controlling stake in the world’s largest wind turbine maker, boosting Vestas’ capacity to finance a major investment in offshore technology.

But news of the possible collaboration is worrying some in Vestas’ China office.

China’s distrust of the Japanese goes back centuries and resentment over atrocities committed in the past frequently flares up during diplomatic disputes.
