Review body backs Australian renewables target at 41TWh

The body that advises the Australian government on its clean-energy policy has recommended leaving the country’s large-scale Renewable Energy Target (RET) intact.

The verdict by the independent Climate Change Authority (CCA) – which was expected following a preliminary decision in October – backs the existing target of 41 terawatt hours of renewable generation by 2020.

The decision comes a relief to Australia’s renewables sector, which has hailed the RET as one of the world’s most ambitious policies and responsible for spurring major demand for clean power.

Opponents of the RET had called on the CCA to recommend a cut in the target, or even to have it scrapped altogether.
