Rio+20: Draft outcome calls for Sustainable Development Goals

Update: A draft outcome for the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development has been adopted today after six days of negotiations led by Brazil.

Non-governmental organizations deride the outcome, adopted ad referendum, as a failure on the eve of the conference, which officially begins on Wednesday.

The 49-page text includes decisions to establish Sustainable Development Goals to be adopted by all countries, reaffirm the Rio Principles and set a process to establish a high-level forum on sustainable development.

The draft outcome will be submitted for formal adoption by heads of state tomorrow.

“We have reached the best possible equilibrium at this point,” says Brazil’s foreign minister Antonio Patriota. “I think we have a very good outcome.”
