Brazil tries to keep Rio+20 on track as leaders prepare to join

Brazil’s government claims it is on track to steer the UN’s Rio+20 summit on sustainable development to a successful outcome, despite many observers continuing to voice doubts that anything significant will be achieved.

Negotiations on the draft text to be adopted by heads of state at Rio+20 are expected to be finalised tonight, according to the Brazilian delegation, which is leading informal consultations before global politicians arrive in Rio later this week.

A strengthening of the powers of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and plans for creating sustainable development goals are examples of progress now on the table at Rio, claims the host government.

“The way is paved for a good final agreement,” says Luiz Alberto Figueiredo, under secretary at the Brazilian foreign ministry.
