Japan gives green light to renewable FITs from July

Domestic producers such as Sharp are expected to benefit from the FITs

Japan’s government today rubber-stamped new feed-in tariffs (FITs) for renewable power generation.

The country’s industry ministry approved the recommendations of an advisory panel that will see PV system owners paid ¥42 ($0.53) per kWh from 1 July, while wind farms will receive ¥23.10/kWh. The FITs run for 20 years.

The solar tariff – among the most generous in the world – is expected to turbocharge the Japanese PV sector at a time when mature markets in Europe are scaling back subsidies.
