Chile looks less bright as Codelco goes cool on renewables

Chile’s state copper miner Codelco has no plans for more renewable energy projects beyond a 1MW solar PV project brought online in June, and is putting a wind tender on ice, Recharge has learned.

“Codelco’s energy needs are already covered through long-term contracts,” says Richard Aylwin, director of sustainable energy and climate change.

Recent reports in Chile that the company is preparing to award a contract for 250MW wind farm to power its mines are out of date and incorrect, Codelco tells Recharge.

“This project will be materialised only if there is some private interest in developing it and selling the energy to others,” says Aylwin.
