Chile's 20% by 2020 renewables dream set to remain just that

Chile’s ambitious plans for a 20% renewables share of power supply by 2020 have been all but abandoned.

Energy minister Jorge Bunster recently said the target – which was never formally adopted – was not achievable, and the existing legal goal of 10% by 2024 would have to suffice.

Renewables represent 4.88% of the existing energy supply – with 878MW operating – just under the 5% currently required by law.

Chile is facing an energy deficit because large-scale projects like its 2.75GW HidroAysen dam and the 2.1GW Castilla coal-fired power plant have been unable to secure the popular support needed to progress.
