Now China complains to WTO over PV subsidies inside EU

Italy's support for EU-made solar is reportedly being questioned by China

China has lodged a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over subsidies favouring solar manufacturers within the EU, opening yet another front in an escalating trade dispute with Western nations.

China’s Ministry of Commerce claims some EU states are breaking WTO rules by offering preferential tariffs to PV generation plants using equipment made in Europe, according to state-owned news agency Xinhua.

The Chinese authorities have identified subsidy regimes in Italy and Greece as among those in breach, says Xinhua.

The ministry has started the WTO dispute process by asking for a consultation over the issue.

The latest Chinese action is similar in tone to a complaint lodged by the EU itself and Japan against local-content-based renewables incentives in the Canadian province of Ontario.
