Regardless of who wins the 6 November presidential election, the US government, corporate America and other private-sector sources of capital will continue to invest in clean energy.

The public strongly favours it; companies want to be seen as green; smart developers and financiers will find ways to make money from it; and global warming is real.

But with austere years ahead at the federal level, the executive branch and Congress will be unable to promote clean technology and innovation to the extent they have since Barack Obama took office.
