Scotland is accelerating its clean-energy ambitions with a new target of meeting 50% of its power demand from renewable sources by 2015.

The new interim goal reflects Scotland’s faster-than-expected progress towards its flagship target of 100% renewable power supply by 2020, and is “ambitious, but also achievable”, claims First Minister Alex Salmond.

The announcement follows statistics from the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) showing that Scotland met 35% of its electricity demand from renewables in 2011, already exceeding the previous interim target of 31%, says the Scottish government.

The government says the 50% goal – part of a revamped national “Renewables Routemap” – is based on capacity which is operational, under construction…
