Update: US issues commercial offshore wind lease to NRG

The US Interior Department (DOI) has issued a 25-year commercial lease to a unit of NRG Energy for exclusive wind energy development in a 96,430-acre (390.2sq km) area 11 nautical miles (20.3km) off the coast of Delaware.

It is the first commercial lease issued under DOI’s “Smart from the Start” initiative that aims to facilitate environmentally responsible offshore wind development in shallow waters of the outer continental shelf along the US east coast.

The lease grants NRG Bluewater Wind Delaware the exclusive right to submit one or more plans to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), a DOI agency, to conduct activities in support of wind energy development in the lease area. It comprises 11 full blocks and 16 partial ones.
