Update: Renewables' ally McGuinty stands down in Ontario

Dalton McGuinty – who made Ontario a renewable energy leader in North America with a controversial feed-in tariff (FIT) programme – abruptly resigned as premier of the Canadian province on Monday night, citing personal and political reasons.

Executives at companies in the provincial green energy space and legal experts do not expect his departure to affect FIT, or contracts approved by programme administrator Ontario Power Authority (OPA).

"The policy frameworks that have been established to facilitate the development of wind energy in Ontario are policies of the Liberal government and we clearly expect them to remain place under a new leader," Robert Hornung, president of the Canadian Wind Energy Association, told delegates surprised by the news at its annual convention here. .
