Brazil delays A-3 and A-5 tenders as it seeks power demand clarity

Both of Brazil’s next power tenders have been delayed again – this time until December – as its government and electricity industry battle to determine an accurate level of demand for future generation projects, Recharge has learned.

The A-3 and A-5 tenders – which have in previous rounds resulted in major power contract wins for wind and other renewables developers – have been shifted from October until 12 and 14 December respectively.

Distributors asked for more time to sort out their future power requirements as the government works through the details of eliminating several previously-awarded thermoelectric contracts, whose projects it has since become clear will never be built. The exact capacity is unclear, but somewhere between 4GW and 6GW of contracts may be involved.
