Dismay as Japan wobbles over nuclear and green targets

Japan will aim for renewables to account for 30% of its total energy supply by the 2030s – three times the current level – as it seeks a new path away from nuclear power.

The target was part of a long-awaited announcement by Tokyo on its energy future, following the disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant last year.

But while the government underlined the key role of renewable energy in the announcement, it stopped short of giving full cabinet approval to a plan unveiled last week that had also targeted a complete phase-out of nuclear power by 2040.
