Renewables deliver more power and profits for utility RWE

German utility giant RWE boosted its renewable power production by 29% year-on-year in the first half of 2012, helped by additional wind capacity and a contribution from its giant new biomass facility in the UK.

RWE Innogy, the utility’s renewable energy division, has converted the former coal station in Tilbury southern England, to a 750MW biomass plant – which was out of action for part of the year due to a huge fire.

RWE’s renewables output was also helped by favourable wind conditions and the addition of 47MW of Spanish wind capacity, bringing its total in the country to 447MW.

The higher output – and increased prices achieved for the power – helped the renewables division post half-year earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda)…
