In Depth: Candidates ignore climate change as US sizzles

Even though July was the hottest month on record in the US, President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney have barely mentioned climate change on the campaign trail, effectively removing it as an issue of importance for 6 November national elections.

Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) say their data shows that July temperatures across the country minus Alaska and Hawaii beat the previous high for that month in 1936.

That year was the worst during the Dust Bowl, a period in the 1930s of severe dust storms that caused major ecological and agricultural damage to American and Canadian prairie lands.

NOAA also notes that July temperatures averaged 77.6 degrees Fahrenheit, 3.3 degrees warmer than the 20th century average for that month, while the first seven months of this year also…
