Described as the world’s largest-ever blackout, the collapse of three of India’s government-operated grid systems on two consecutive days has damaged the image of a country trying to present itself as a rising superpower.

While power outages are nothing new, these latest glitches plunged 670 million of India’s citizens into darkness and raise big questions over the reliability of the fragile centralised power system.

Speculation abounds as to the causes of the outages on 30 and 31 July that brought daily life in 28 states to a near standstill.
