New Polish law promotes wind and PV at expense of biomass

After months of behind-the-scenes wrangling, Poland has unveiled a draft renewable-energy law intended to aid wind and solar developers at the expense of large-scale biomass co-firing.

Although the level of support for onshore wind will be reduced from its present level, the proposals were nevertheless praised by the local wind industry for including a number of welcome provisions, including streamlining the registration process.

The new law would also bolster support for PV – a technology that has made very little progress in Poland thus far – and would put Poland’s nascent offshore wind sector on firmer footing.

But given Poland’s heavy dependence on coal, and the government’s seeming lack of desire to change the country’s energy mix any faster…
