Siemens' renewables profits hit by $39m wind component charge

German engineering giant Siemens saw operating profits from its renewable energy business fall by 47% in its financial third quarter after making a €32m ($38.9m) provision relating to a wind turbine component.

The unit’s profits fell to €36m, from €68m during the same quarter in 2011, because of a €32m financial provision in connection with a wind turbine component from a supplier, and a further charge of €20m related to “capacity adjustment".

Siemens says the component provision follows "quality problems with blade bearings from an external supplier. These blade bearings must be replaced".

Revenues from renewable energy increased by 48%, as the company continued to convert its backlog of wind-power orders into sales.
