Onshore wind escapes deeper UK support cuts, faces review

A UK onshore wind farm

The UK government has maintained its planned level of reduction in support for onshore wind under its renewable obligation certificate (ROC) scheme, ending fears of an immediate harsher cut.

Support for onshore wind will be reduced by 10% to 0.9 ROCs per MWh for the 2013-17 period, as proposed in a consultation carried out in autumn 2011.

The decision follows months of infighting within the government, with reports that the Treasury, led by chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne, was seeking a much larger reduction – possibly as high as 25%.

However, the government says that while the 0.9 ROC level is guaranteed until 2014, it could alter after that if there is a “significant” change in generation costs.
