China's top officials want 50GW of solar installed by 2020

China wants renewable energy to account for 4.5% of total consumption by 2015

China is aiming for 50GW of installed solar capacity by 2020, reveals a new document from the nation’s government.

The target is part of a plan by the State Council – China’s cabinet – to boost the level of income generated by ‘strategic emerging industries’ such as new energy sources, IT and energy-saving technology.

The document, published on the State Council’s website, also confirms a target for 21GW of solar power by 2015.

China’s energy officials have already said that they are likely to enshrine the 21GW target in the country’s upcoming five-year plan for renewable energy.

The new, separate plan from State Council appears to be “final confirmation”…
