Altmaier turns up the political heat over German energy shift

The Energiewende is a key issue in German politics

German environment minister Peter Altmaier has issued a critical assessment of several key pillars of the country’s energy transition (Energiewende), turning up the political temperature in the run-up to next year’s federal election.

Altmaier openly questioned the country’s ability to meet its formal 2020 targets on electric vehicles and energy efficiency, while acknowledging deep concerns about the impact of renewables on fast-rising electricity prices.

In doing so, he implicitly criticised transport minister Peter Ramsauer, a fellow member of the centre-right Christian Democrats (CDU), and economy minister Philipp Rösler, who is chairman of the pro-market Free Democratic Party (FDP) – the junior partner in Chancellor Angela Merkel’s coalition government.
