1GW Australian wind project put back as PV takes priority

There will be a delay before turbines at Silverton join AGL's existing wind fleet

The start-date for work on Australia’s 1GW Silverton wind farm has been pushed back into 2014 after AGL Energy decided to give priority to building two PV plants that have received A$195m ($193m) of government funding.

Construction of Silverton – sited in the New South Wales (NSW) outback and potentially the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest wind farm – was scheduled by power-producer AGL to start by the end of next year.

But it has emerged that this has been shunted back to allow AGL to focus on the thin-film solar projects, which will be built with the help of Australia’s federal Solar Flagships support scheme and state funding.
