Spanish premier Rajoy confirms plans for new 'energy tax'

Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy told a plenary session of congress today that his government is planning to introduce a new “energy fiscal scheme” – confirming that a new tax is on the way.

Rajoy’s comments come after weeks of rumours that the government is planning a “generation tax” that could have a negative impact on Spain’s renewables sector, and in particular solar power.

Reports have suggested that the tax will be levied according to “efficiency” of power generation in terms of cost per MWh, which would effectively punish solar and claw back subsidies the sector receives under current regulations.
