IEA hails renewables' 'coming of age' with 40% growth forecast

The IEA expects China to account for 40% of the extra renewables capacity

Growth in new markets – especially China – will help global clean-power production to expand by more than 40% by 2017, according to a study by the International Energy Agency (IEA) which hails the renewable sector’s “coming of age”.

Renewable production will expand by 1,840 terawatt hours (TWh) by 2017 compared to the 2011 level, says the IEA’s Medium-Term Renewable Energy Market Report 2012.

The extra production – which far outstrips the 1,160TWh added between 2005 and 2011 – will take renewables to a total annual output of almost 6,400TWh in 2017.

The IEA expects 710GW of extra renewable capacity to be added, with growth most pronounced in new markets and outside the OECD, says the IEA.

The report says China will account for almost 40% of the new gigawatts, with Log in to read complete article.
