China poised to raise solar capacity target to 21GW by 2015

China is poised to set an expanded target for solar generation capacity of 21GW by 2015, according to reports.

The new goal is the latest in a series of upward revisions that officials have apparently deemed necessary to the solar target under China’s 12th five-year plan for renewable energy.

The five-year plan remains unpublished – despite the fact that the targeted period (2011-2015) is already underway – but the solar capacity ambition has been widely discussed.

China had originally aimed for 5GW of solar by 2015, but officials are understood to have proposed a revision to 15GW in recent months as lower equipment prices make PV more attractive.
