Politicians who believe fracking can solve the world's problems are making a grave mistake

The need for a “dash for gas” is a seductive message being peddled by oil companies to politicians looking for cheap and easy lower-carbon solutions.

And nowhere more so than in the US, where the price of natural gas has conveniently plummeted to below $2 per British thermal unit (BTU).

Back in July 2008, before the “shale revolution”, the price was more than five times higher. Now virtually every country — especially Japan and China, where the price can still be as high as $18/BTU — is wondering whether it can find its own shale reserves.

Gas has been seized on by climate change deniers as an alternative to more expensive and slower-to-build wind and solar schemes.
