South Africa extends deadline for first-round renewables winners

South Africa has extended the financing deadline for first-round renewables projects, as its government effectively admitted it had taken too long over regulatory approvals.

Pretoria will push the 30 June cut-off back by at least two weeks due to “logistical issues on the government side”, according to Ompi Aphane, deputy director general at the Department of Energy.

The deadline concerns the 1.4GW of projects awarded last December alongside the UN climate talks in Durban. State-owned utility Eskom is understood to be moving sluggishly when it comes to signing power purchase agreements.

The extension reflects South Africa’s genuine commitment to fostering a renewables boom in Africa’s largest economy.
