US Commerce Secretary Bryson resigns after accidents

John Bryson, the US Commerce Secretary with an energy industry pedigree, resigned Thursday, 12 days after he was involved in automobile accidents blamed on seizures.

Bryson, nominated for the post by President Barack Obama and sworn into office last October, had an energy industry career distinguished by lofty posts including chairman and chief executive of Edison International, the parent company of utility Southern California Edison and power generation business Edison Mission Group; chairman of the board at BrightSource Energy, the solar power tower project developer; and president of California Public Utilities Commission. Earlier in his career, Bryson co-founded the Natural Resources Defense Council.
