National Grid and Statnett commit to 700km UK-Norway link

North Sea Network would be the world's longest undersea power cable

Grid operators in the UK and Norway have pledged to press on with plans to build a power interconnector between the two nations, as a Norwegian project to link with Germany also gets underway.

National Grid of the UK and Norwegian group Statnett want to have the link, called the North Sea Network, operational by 2020.

The two have been studying the project’s feasibility since 2009, and recommitted to the link in an agreement signed today.

With a capacity of up to 1.4GW, the interconnector would give the UK access to Norway’s hydro generation and allow the latter to take advantage of Britain’s offshore wind production, forming part of a wider North European power grid.
