A mountain to climb: why hopes are low for the Rio+20 summit

The outlook for clear and focused measures emerging from the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Brazil is dismal.

World leaders, the private sector and non-governmental organisations will gather in Rio de Janeiro from June 20-22, but expectations are low.

“Failures of commitment, failures of process and failures of leadership could lead to the collapse of talks on achieving a long-term sustainable world,” says the WWF.
