Offshore wind to boost UK GDP by 0.4% by 2020 – study

The offshore wind sector will boost the UK’s GDP by 0.2% by 2015 and 0.4% by 2020, according to a report by the Centre for Economics and Business research commissioned by Mainstream Renewable Power.

The report, which is being published to coincide with the Global Offshore Wind conference in London, states that the UK Offshore wind sector has the potential to create 45,000 jobs by 2015 and over 97,000 jobs by 2020.

By 2030, the sector could add 0.6% to GDP and sustain 173,000 jobs, the reports says, as well as produce a £18.8 billion boost in net exports, plugging 75% of the UK’s current balance of trade deficit.
