Brazil delays power tenders again in face of flagging demand

Oversupply means Brazil is unlikely to contract as much wind power as hoped

Brazil’s energy ministry has further delayed the country’s A-3 and A-5 power tenders because of a lack of appetite among distributors in the face of looming market-oversupply.

The A-3 process, scheduled for 28 June, has been pushed back to 11 October, while the A-5 tender round has been moved from 16 August to 25 October.

The A-3 tender, seen as the more attractive for wind power, had already been delayed once because Brazil’s distributors have contracted a surplus of power for 2015 – the year in which the successful projects would need to come on line.
