BOEM takes first step to consider Rhode Island offshore link

The US Interior Department has issued a request to determine whether competitive interest exists in a right-of-way corridor for transmission sought by developer Deepwater Wind to link a 30MW pilot offshore wind farm with the Rhode Island coast.

Deepwater submitted an application to the department’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) for an eight-nautical-mile-long (14.8km), 200-foot-wide (60.9 metre) corridor in federal waters on the outer continental shelf in the Atlantic Ocean.

The wind farm would be located 2.5 nautical miles southeast of Block Island. The proposed offshore transmission connection would also transmit power from the existing onshore grid to Block Island.

Before reviewing the right-of-way application, BOEM must determine whether there are other developers interested in constructing transmission facilities in the same area. If BOEM receives indications of competitive Log in to read complete article.
