South Africa hands out 1GW in second renewables tender

South Africa's government gave strong backing to wind, PV and concentrating solar power (CSP) as it revealed the “preferred bidders” from its second renewables tender, awarding 1.04GW of total capacity out of the maximum 1.23GW on offer.

The result – issued on schedule today and at roughly the same scale as expected – offers encouragement to developers and manufacturers that are keen to see South Africa emerge as a beach-head for the sub-Saharan renewables market.

The amount of both PV and wind capacity handed out was at the high end of the government’s ceiling, suggesting the presence of a strong pool of competitive bids and of projects the authorities believe will offer significant benefits to the local economy.
