India plans to add almost 30GW of renewables by 2017

India’s government says the country plans to sharply increase its rate of renewable energy installation between now and 2017.

India plans to add 29.8GW of renewable capacity in the next five years – more than double the 12.4GW it targeted for the 2007-2011 period.

This would take the country’s total clean-energy capacity to 53GW in 2017, from the 23.2GW currently in place.

The targets are part of India’s 12th Five-Year Plan for its economy, which runs between 2012 and 2017.

The country wants to install 15GW of wind power, 2.1GW of small hydropower, 10GW of solar and 2.7GW of bioenergy, Minister of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Farooq Abdullah says.
