Statkraft boosts output but takes hit from low power prices

Hydropower production was up at Statkraft

Norwegian utility Statkraft boosted its wind output in the first quarter of the year but made less profit from the power it produced, due to lower electricity prices in the Nordic region.

Statkraft sold 0.3TWh of wind in the first three months of the year, 50% more than in the same quarter in 2011.

But it booked an underlying operating profit of NKr16m ($2.7m) from its wind business, compared to NKr26m last time, because of the depressed prices caused by a surplus of power in the Nordic market.

The picture was mirrored in Statkraft’s huge hydropower operations, where production was 26% higher but profits were down.

“Nordic power prices were on average 42% lower than in the corresponding quarter in 2011,” says Statkraft.
