MEMC Q1 loss widens on plummeting solar division sales

MEMC Electronic Materials posted a $92m net loss, or 40 cents a share, in the first quarter, as solar sales declined and restructuring, impairment and other charges hurt margins.

MEMC had a $4.5m net loss, or 2 cents a share, a year earlier. First quarter sales were $519.2m, down 29% from $735.9m a year earlier and also a 28% decrease from $717.8m in fourth quarter 2011.

“The sequential decrease was primarily driven by lower solar project sales, significantly lower solar wafer volume and pricing, and weaker semiconductor wafer volume and pricing,” MEMC says in a statement. The company is moving to limit wafer sales to external parties and focus production for internal consumption.
