Wells Fargo pledges $30bn in 'green' financing by 2020

US bank Wells Fargo says it intends to make $30bn in loans and investments in wind solar, efficiency and other "green" financing by 2020.

The San Francisco-based bank also pledged $100m in grants to support community environmental efforts and a 40% improvement in its own energy efficiency.

Chief executive John Stumpf says the goals reflect a belief that the company's responsibility includes "promoting the long-term economic prosperity and quality of life of the communities we serve".

Wells Fargo's 2011 environmental financing portfolio totaled $2.8bn, bringing it to $11.7bn invested since 2005, including $3.8bn in debt and equity for US renewable energy projects.

2011 activity included $450m in solar PV project tax equity and $200m for wind.
