Shale gas will not stop wind reaching parity, says RES boss

The recent upsurge in exploration of shale gas will not stop the wind industry from reaching parity with natural-gas-powered electricity before 2020, says RES chief executive Ian Mays.

“Shale gas will have a limited impact on gas prices in Europe,” he says.

Very low gas prices in the US have been possible because the country is effectively an island and not able to export the extra gas from shale. “If it did, the prices would come up to the international level,” says Mays. “It creates uncertainty, but we shouldn’t expect to see the prices we have seen in the US.”

He says that RES is looking to markets such as Canada, Norway, Sweden, Australia and Chile to provide growth…
