EU energy chief slams abrupt changes to renewables support

EU Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger has slammed countries that have made abrupt and retroactive changes to renewables support mechanisms, warning that clean-energy incentives are being used as a “scapegoat” for deficits in government finance.

“There are positive examples like Denmark, but other countries have gone in the other direction with changes applied abruptly and sometimes retroactively that have negative consequences, and can destroy confidence in the sector,” says Oettinger.

He adds: “In some case renewables support is being used as scapegoat, but public deficits are not caused by support regimes."

Oettinger says the European Commission will continue to monitor countries closely to make sure they stay on track to meet the commitments for 2020 set out in their national renewable energy action plans. It may be necessary…
