UPDATE: Federal funding for Solar Dawn ‘under consideration’

Australia’s energy minister Martin Ferguson says the federal government is considering its own position in light of the Queensland government’s decision to withdraw funding from the 250MW Solar Dawn solar thermal project led by France's Areva.

"If the new Queensland government chose to breach the existing financial commitment to the Solar Dawn project, the Australian government would naturally need to consider its own position," Ferguson says in a statement.

The Labor-led federal government pledged A$464m to the A$1.2bn project – led by a unit of Areva in partnership with Australian developer Wind Prospect CWP – under its Solar Flagships funding programme. Queensland had promised to provide A$75m under former Labor premier Anna Bligh, who was ousted in Saturday’s election.
