Wisconsin adopts wind turbine siting rules sought by industry

Wisconsin’s legislature has rebuffed efforts to increase the set back distance for wind turbines, which allowed siting rules favored by industry members and advocates to take effect on 15 March.

At least one member of the majority Republican Party broke ranks in the Senate to oppose a bill that called for a 1,800-foot (548.6 meters) set back from the nearest property line.

This compared with Wisconsin Public Service Commission (PSC) siting rules that require a property line setback of 1.1 times the turbine height and that turbines be no closer than 1,250-feet from the nearest residence.

The siting rules were developed after an extensive public consultation process that involved stakeholders and sought to achieve unified standards that were applicable across the state.
