Obama touts near-doubling of US renewables since 2008

The Obama administration, defending against Republican attacks that it has not done enough to stem increasing fuel prices, said this week the US has nearly doubled energy generation from wind, solar and geothermal since 2008.

President Barack Obama set out to double the nation's renewable energy generation through his 2009 economic stimulus bill. Department of Energy loans back some 40 clean energy projects, while Treasury cash grants contributed needed financing to thousands of others. Both programs came to an end last year.

These effort along with state renewables mandates have helped boost US wind, solar and geothermal generation from 72.6TWh in 2008 to 140.8TWh last year, according to data from the US Energy Information Administration. Energy generation from those sources is forecast to reach 159.6TWh…
